Is There Another Mosquito-Borne Virus to Be Concerned About?

While discussions about mosquitoes and viruses often center around familiar names like Zika and West Nile, a new threat is emerging in parts of the U.S. Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito and, although rare, it can be extremely serious. Approximately one-third of those infected die, often within 10 days of the onset of symptoms, and survivors may face lingering neurological issues.

EEE cases have been reported in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, and Wisconsin, with the first EEE-related death occurring in New Hampshire. To minimize exposure when mosquitoes are most active, several towns in Massachusetts have closed public parks from dusk until dawn.

Symptoms of EEE may not always be present, but when they do occur, they resemble those of other viral infections: fever, chills, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or fatigue. In severe cases, the virus can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord).

Although Louisiana has not reported any EEE cases yet, the state is among the 33 in the U.S. experiencing West Nile cases this year. With an increase in West Nile infections as well, it’s essential to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites:

  • Avoid scented skin products
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity
  • Use insect repellent
  • Eliminate standing water around your home

Staying informed and taking preventive measures can help protect against these mosquito-borne threats.
