Uncovering the Details About Bulbous Noses

You may have noticed that some older men develop a red, bumpy, and swollen nose. This condition, known as rhinophyma, was once thought to be linked to excessive alcohol consumption, but experts now understand that it is actually caused by severe rosacea.

Rosacea is a common skin condition that leads to redness and flushing, particularly on the nose and cheeks. Mild cases of rosacea are treatable with prescription creams or gels, while more severe cases may require oral antibiotics or acne medications. Flare-ups are often triggered by stress or sun exposure.

If rosacea is left untreated, it can progress into rhinophyma, characterized by a swollen nose, enlarged pores, visible oil glands, and thickened skin. Rhinophyma primarily affects men between the ages of 50 and 70, especially those with fair skin or a family history of the condition.

While rhinophyma is often considered a cosmetic issue, severe cases can also impair nasal function. Treating rosacea early is key to preventing rhinophyma, but in some cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to remove excess skin, reduce blood vessels, and improve both appearance and breathing. Common treatments include laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, and surgical shaving.

Both rosacea and rhinophyma are easily diagnosable. If you suspect you may have either condition, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist to get the proper treatment.
